John 1
The Eternal Word
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend[a] it.
John’s Witness: The True Light
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.[b]10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own,[c] and His own[d] did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
The Word Becomes Flesh
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’” 16 And[e] of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son,[f] who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.
A Voice in the Wilderness
19 Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said: “I am‘ The voice of one crying in the wilderness:“ Make straight the way of the LORD,”’[g]
as the prophet Isaiah said.”24 Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees. 25 And they asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know. 27 It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.” 28 These things were done in Bethabara[h] beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The Lamb of God
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ 31 I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.” 32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
The First Disciples
35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour). 40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah.[i] You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).
Philip and Nathanael
43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter[j] you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Water Turned to Wine
1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” 6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 10 And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!” 11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. 12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days.
Jesus Cleanses the Temple
13 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. 15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten[a] Me up.”[b]18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?” 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them;[c] and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.
The Discerner of Hearts
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.

El Verbo se hizo hombre
1 En el principio ya existía el *Verbo, y el Verbo estaba con Dios, y el Verbo era Dios. 2 Él estaba con Dios en el principio. 3 Por medio de él todas las cosas fueron creadas; sin él, nada de lo creado llegó a existir. 4 En él estaba la vida, y la vida era la luz de la *humanidad. 5 Esta luz resplandece en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no han podido extinguirla.[a] 6 Vino un hombre llamado Juan. Dios lo envió7 como testigo para dar testimonio de la luz, a fin de que por medio de él todos creyeran.8 Juan no era la luz, sino que vino para dar testimonio de la luz.9 Esa luz verdadera, la que alumbra a todo *ser humano, venía a este mundo.[b] 10 El que era la luz ya estaba en el mundo, y el mundo fue creado por medio de él, pero el mundo no lo reconoció.11 Vino a lo que era suyo, pero los suyos no lo recibieron.12 Mas a cuantos lo recibieron, a los que creen en su nombre, les dio el derecho de ser hijos de Dios.13 Éstos no nacen de la sangre, ni por deseos *naturales, ni por voluntad humana, sino que nacen de Dios. 14 Y el Verbo se hizo hombre y habitó[c] entre nosotros. Y hemos contemplado su gloria, la gloria que corresponde al Hijo *unigénito del Padre, lleno de gracia y de verdad. 15 Juan dio testimonio de él, y a voz en cuello proclamó: «Éste es aquel de quien yo decía: "El que viene después de mí es superior a mí, porque existía antes que yo." »16 De su plenitud todos hemos recibido gracia sobre gracia,17 pues la ley fue dada por medio de Moisés, mientras que la gracia y la verdad nos han llegado por medio de *Jesucristo.18 A Dios nadie lo ha visto nunca; el Hijo unigénito, que es Dios[d] y que vive en unión íntima con el Padre, nos lo ha dado a conocer.
Juan el Bautista niega ser el Cristo
19 Éste es el testimonio de Juan cuando los judíos de Jerusalén enviaron sacerdotes y levitas a preguntarle quién era.20 No se negó a declararlo, sino que confesó con franqueza:
—Yo no soy el *Cristo. 21 —¿Quién eres entonces? —le preguntaron—. ¿Acaso eres Elías?
—No lo soy.
—¿Eres el profeta?
—No lo soy. 22 —¿Entonces quién eres? ¡Tenemos que llevar una respuesta a los que nos enviaron! ¿Cómo te ves a ti mismo? 23 —Yo soy la voz del que grita en el desierto: "Enderecen el camino del Señor" [e] —respondió Juan, con las palabras del profeta Isaías. 24 Algunos que habían sido enviados por los *fariseos25 lo interrogaron:
—Pues si no eres el Cristo, ni Elías ni el profeta, ¿por qué bautizas? 26 —Yo bautizo con[f] agua, pero entre ustedes hay alguien a quien no conocen,27 y que viene después de mí, al cual yo no soy digno ni siquiera de desatarle la correa de las sandalias. 28 Todo esto sucedió en Betania, al otro lado del río Jordán, donde Juan estaba bautizando.
Jesús, el Cordero de Dios
29 Al día siguiente Juan vio a Jesús que se acercaba a él, y dijo: «¡Aquí tienen al Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo!30 De éste hablaba yo cuando dije: "Después de mí viene un hombre que es superior a mí, porque existía antes que yo." 31 Yo ni siquiera lo conocía, pero, para que él se revelara al pueblo de Israel, vine bautizando con agua.» 32 Juan declaró: «Vi al Espíritu descender del cielo como una paloma y permanecer sobre él.33 Yo mismo no lo conocía, pero el que me envió a bautizar con agua me dijo: "Aquel sobre quien veas que el Espíritu desciende y permanece, es el que bautiza con el Espíritu Santo." 34 Yo lo he visto y por eso testifico que éste es el Hijo de Dios.»
Los primeros discípulos de Jesús
(A) 35 Al día siguiente Juan estaba de nuevo allí, con dos de sus discípulos.36 Al ver a Jesús que pasaba por ahí, dijo:
—¡Aquí tienen al Cordero de Dios! 37 Cuando los dos discípulos le oyeron decir esto, siguieron a Jesús.38 Jesús se volvió y, al ver que lo seguían, les preguntó:
—¿Qué buscan?
—Rabí, ¿dónde te hospedas? (Rabí significa: Maestro.) 39 —Vengan a ver —les contestó Jesús.
Ellos fueron, pues, y vieron dónde se hospedaba, y aquel mismo día se quedaron con él. Eran como las cuatro de la tarde.[g] 40 Andrés, hermano de Simón Pedro, era uno de los dos que, al oír a Juan, habían seguido a Jesús.41 Andrés encontró primero a su hermano Simón, y le dijo:
—Hemos encontrado al Mesías (es decir, el *Cristo). 42 Luego lo llevó a Jesús, quien mirándolo fijamente, le dijo:
—Tú eres Simón, hijo de Juan. Serás llamado *Cefas (es decir, Pedro).
Jesús llama a Felipe y a Natanael
43 Al día siguiente, Jesús decidió salir hacia Galilea. Se encontró con Felipe, y lo llamó:
—Sígueme. 44 Felipe era del pueblo de Betsaida, lo mismo que Andrés y Pedro.45 Felipe buscó a Natanael y le dijo:
—Hemos encontrado a Jesús de Nazaret, el hijo de José, aquel de quien escribió Moisés en la ley, y de quien escribieron los profetas. 46 —¡De Nazaret! —replicó Natanael—. ¿Acaso de allí puede salir algo bueno?
—Ven a ver —le contestó Felipe. 47 Cuando Jesús vio que Natanael se le acercaba, comentó:
—Aquí tienen a un verdadero israelita, en quien no hay falsedad. 48 —¿De dónde me conoces? —le preguntó Natanael.
—Antes de que Felipe te llamara, cuando aún estabas bajo la higuera, ya te había visto. 49 —Rabí, ¡tú eres el Hijo de Dios! ¡Tú eres el Rey de Israel! —declaró Natanael. 50 —¿Lo crees porque te dije que te vi cuando estabas debajo de la higuera? ¡Vas a ver aun cosas más grandes que éstas!
Y añadió: 51 —Ciertamente les aseguro que ustedes verán abrirse el cielo, y a los ángeles de Dios subir y bajar sobre el Hijo del hombre.

Jesús cambia el agua en vino
1 Al tercer día se celebró una boda en Caná de Galilea, y la madre de Jesús se encontraba allí.2 También habían sido invitados a la boda Jesús y sus discípulos.3 Cuando el vino se acabó, la madre de Jesús le dijo:
—Ya no tienen vino. 4 —Mujer, ¿eso qué tiene que ver conmigo? —respondió Jesús—. Todavía no ha llegado mi hora. 5 Su madre dijo a los sirvientes:
—Hagan lo que él les ordene. 6 Había allí seis tinajas de piedra, de las que usan los judíos en sus ceremonias de *purificación. En cada una cabían unos cien litros.[a] 7 Jesús dijo a los sirvientes:
—Llenen de agua las tinajas.
Y los sirvientes las llenaron hasta el borde. 8 —Ahora saquen un poco y llévenlo al encargado del banquete —les dijo Jesús.
Así lo hicieron.9 El encargado del banquete probó el agua convertida en vino sin saber de dónde había salido, aunque sí lo sabían los sirvientes que habían sacado el agua. Entonces llamó aparte al novio10 y le dijo:
—Todos sirven primero el mejor vino, y cuando los invitados ya han bebido mucho, entonces sirven el más barato; pero tú has guardado el mejor vino hasta ahora. 11 Ésta, la primera de sus señales, la hizo Jesús en Caná de Galilea. Así reveló su gloria, y sus discípulos creyeron en él. 12 Después de esto Jesús bajó a Capernaúm con su madre, sus hermanos y sus discípulos, y se quedaron allí unos días.
Jesús purifica el templo
(A) 13 Cuando se aproximaba la Pascua de los judíos, subió Jesús a Jerusalén.14 Y en el *templo[b] halló a los que vendían bueyes, ovejas y palomas, e instalados en sus mesas a los que cambiaban dinero.15 Entonces, haciendo un látigo de cuerdas, echó a todos del templo, juntamente con sus ovejas y sus bueyes; regó por el suelo las monedas de los que cambiaban dinero y derribó sus mesas.16 A los que vendían las palomas les dijo:
—¡Saquen esto de aquí! ¿Cómo se atreven a convertir la casa de mi Padre en un mercado? 17 Sus discípulos se acordaron de que está escrito: «El celo por tu casa me consumirá.»[c]18 Entonces los judíos reaccionaron, preguntándole:
—¿Qué señal puedes mostrarnos para actuar de esta manera? 19 —Destruyan este templo —respondió Jesús—, y lo levantaré de nuevo en tres días. 20 —Tardaron cuarenta y seis años en construir este templo, ¿y tú vas a levantarlo en tres días? 21 Pero el templo al que se refería era su propio cuerpo.22 Así, pues, cuando se *levantó de entre los muertos, sus discípulos se acordaron de lo que había dicho, y creyeron en la Escritura y en las palabras de Jesús. 23 Mientras estaba en Jerusalén, durante la fiesta de la Pascua, muchos creyeron en su nombre al ver las señales que hacía.24 En cambio Jesús no les creía porque los conocía a todos;25 no necesitaba que nadie le informara nada[d] acerca de los demás, pues él conocía el interior del *ser humano.
